A wonderful aroma of lemon balm, sage, rosemary, mint, oregano and many popular garden herbs filled the air at the herbal workshop organised by the Saarpfalz district's Coordination Centre for Sustainable Youth Work/Young Biosphere. Together, the participants produced an aromatic biosphere herb syrup that not only tastes delicious, but also reflects the diversity and richness of local nature.
At the beginning of the workshop, the participants went on an exciting herbal expedition through Blieskastel and into the Bürgergarten. Numerous fragrant herbs and medicinal plants were discovered, collected and their many uses presented. The ribwort plantain, which is known as a natural remedy for minor injuries, aroused particular interest and gave rise to many interesting conversations.
Afterwards, the participants were able to give free rein to their creativity and personalise the syrup bottles. The result was not only tasty, but also lovingly designed memories of a successful afternoon.
"Our local herbs are a valuable treasure of the Bliesgau biosphere. Workshops like this provide a vivid way of learning about nature on our doorstep and show how closely enjoyment, health and regional identity are linked. I am very pleased to see how enthusiastic the participants were," emphasised District Administrator and Association Chairman Frank John.

The success of the workshop was demonstrated just a few days later at the "Climate change and health" lecture at the Kulturhaus Gersheim, which took place as part of the biosphere lecture series organised by the Saarpfalz District Savings Bank's Culture and Environment Foundation. The guests were served the biosphere herbal syrup they had made themselves. The refreshing summer drink made from self-collected herbs from the biosphere was very well received and delighted visitors with its natural flavour and regional origin.
