In his talk ‘The Perfect State?’, beekeeper Hans-Werner Krick will explain, on 17 September at 7.00 pm, what exactly goes on in the darkness of a beehive; or can you imagine 100,000 bees living together in such a confined space and in complete darkness, without any leader and without any rules, getting on with one another in the long term? Let’s reveal this much for now: bees practise a form of coexistence that we humans can only marvel at, and which makes the achievements of human civilisation and our own way of living together seem not quite so magnificent after all
On 20 September at 11.00 am, District Administrator Frank John will open Rosemarie Kappler’s photography exhibition ‘Draußen na’tier’lich! – Wildlife between the Saar, Rhine and Moselle’ at a vernissage. Nature photography, when practised seriously, is not merely a challenge; it is an ongoing process which, at its best, leads to a new inner attitude. A sense of awe at biodiversity and a basic measure of humility are essential to temper the photographer’s hunting instinct and passion for collecting. The challenge also lies in realising that one does not necessarily have to travel to ‘exotic’ destinations to take interesting photographs. One simply needs to open one’s mind and perhaps allow a little of the curiosity of one’s inner child to shine through. And, of course, one must get out and about. Often. Very often. It was with this realisation in mind that Rosemarie Kappler created the photographs for the exhibition ‘Draußen na’tier’lich!’. Admission to the opening and to the exhibition as a whole is free.
Finally, this year’s seminar programme concludes on 24 September at 7.00 pm with the event ‘From Fruit to Schnapps’, a talk on mashing and the production of spirits. Mash-in and distillation are excellent ways to make the most of your own fruit harvest whilst also helping to preserve local orchard meadows. Fruit tree expert Harry Lavall will discuss the most important local fruit varieties and offer tips on what to bear in mind during the mash-in process and afterwards. The history and legal background of distilling will be explained, along with the differences between a brandy, spirit, liqueur and other spirits.
