This year, the series of events will take place from 6 September to 2 October and invites participants to explore the themes of life, death, grief and hope. The opening event on Sunday 6 September at 11.00 am at the Saalbau Homburg is entitled ‘Life goes on longer than you think’. The patron of the Hospice Days, District Administrator Frank John, will welcome guests alongside Barbara Aßmann, Diocesan Caritas Director and Chair of the Ecumenical Hospice Aid.
The highlight of the opening event will be a talk by Samuel Koch. He will demonstrate how it is possible to find quality of life and develop new perspectives even under the most difficult circumstances. It is precisely when a person is considered to have ‘run out of treatment options’ and hope seems to be fading that it becomes clear: life remains valuable and worth living right to the very end. This is precisely where hospice care comes in. It supports seriously ill, dying and bereaved people with care, dignity and a focus on what is still possible. Following Samuel Koch’s talk, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and find out more about hospice and bereavement support at various exhibition stands.
The events organised as part of Hospice Days provide an insight into hospice work, offer information on support services in the region and provide a space for people to meet and share experiences. “It is not always easy to come to terms with the issues of dying and death. Yet, sooner or later in life, they affect us all directly. Particularly at the end of life, we want gentle, needs-based support for our loved ones, but also for ourselves. This is precisely what the many staff and volunteers working in hospice care make possible. The Hospice Days in the Saarpfalz district draw attention to this important social work and raise awareness of the issue amongst the general public. They provide a framework for exploring the themes of life and dying, grief and hope through a variety of event formats,” emphasises District Administrator Frank John.
