Under the motto ‘Many voices – one sound’, the Coloured Voices women’s choir from Bliesmengen-Bolchen, conducted by Frank Huppert, is organising an ‘open choir rehearsal’ in collaboration with the Saarpfalz District Adult Education Centre. This will take place as part of the ‘Long Night of Democracy’ on Friday 2 October, from 6.30 pm at the Bebelsheim village community centre (Mandelbachtal). District Administrator Frank John has announced that he will be attending.
“A choir, too, is a symbol of democracy: many voices come together to create something shared – they listen to one another, complement one another and find harmony. Our democracy thrives on the fact that different people are allowed to have their say. That is why I think this event is a wonderful way of bringing democracy to life. I am delighted and grateful that our district adult education centre, together with the Coloured Voices choir, is involved in this initiative and helping to shape it, and I hope that this ‘open choir rehearsal’ will be met with equally open ears,” emphasises the District Administrator.
Coloured Voices
Frank Huppert from Reinheim founded the women’s choir 31 years ago. That is certainly a respectable length of time, during which the number of active singers has risen steadily. The choir’s name is reflected in its repertoire, which is colourful and varied, featuring works from the genres of pop, musicals, film and gospel. However, classical literature and hymns also form an integral part of their repertoire. Having given numerous concerts from the very beginning, primarily throughout the Saarland, the singers have always delighted their audiences and today enjoy a loyal following. For decades, the Willi-Graf-Haus in Bliesmengen-Bolchen was their much-loved rehearsal venue, until it was sold and Coloured Voices found a new home in the Bliestalhalle. When the hall was temporarily closed in February this year due to fire safety deficiencies, the choir moved to Bebelsheim, where, thankfully, space was made available in the village community centre so that they could rehearse on Fridays at their usual time between 6.30 pm and 7 pm.
That is where the ‘Open Choir Rehearsal’ will take place. So what will this involve? Following a welcome, the choir members would first like to talk about their rehearsal work, before everyone sings together for about an hour. Frank Huppert will provide the appropriate choral repertoire. There are sure to be one or two pieces included that are intended for upcoming performances. Afterwards, the Saarpfalz District Adult Education Centre and Coloured Voices invite everyone to a drinks reception, offering an opportunity to chat.

On the eve of ‘German Unity Day’, the ‘Long Night of Democracy’ is taking place in Saarland for the first time – with events across the state centred on the theme of democracy. It is being organised by the Saarbrücken Regional Association’s Adult Education Centre in collaboration with the Saarland Democracy Foundation, the Saarland State Centre for Political Education, the European Academy Otzenhausen gGmbH, the ASKO Europa Foundation, the Adolf Bender Centre and the Association of Adult Education Centres in Saarland e. V.
