Heating system GemS Gersheim

Conversion of the GemS Gersheim heating system

The heating system at Gersheim Community School was replaced in 2022-2023. The heating system generates the heat and hot water for all parts of the building (including the sports hall) covering almost 10,000 m².

There is a switch from natural gas as the main energy source to wood pellets with natural gas peak load coverage. You can find out what wood pellets are, how they are produced and which wood is used here.

The two pellet stores are located in the old swimming pool of the former indoor swimming pool - people are now swimming in pellets, so to speak! These are supplied by regional partners in order to keep the supply chains short.

Since the renovation, as much of the energy required for heating and hot water as possible has been covered by renewable energies. Only a very small proportion is supplemented by the new gas condensing heating system.

This means that the pellet boiler covers as much of the demand as possible and only uses gas for heating or hot water when absolutely necessary. Gas consumption is less than 5% over the year.

The entire heating centre including heating distributor, hot water preparation and building automation were renewed. The pellet store was also equipped with a ventilation system.

At the press event in January 2024, the facility was presented by the technical property management team in the presence of District Administrator Dr Theophil Gallo, the head of department at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Dr Leysa Matiyuk, and Mayor Michael Clivot.
