EU-LIFE project ZENAPA
"Zero Emission Nature Protection Areas (LIFE-IP ZENAPA)
On 1 November 2016, the "LIFE-IP ZENAPA - Zero Emission Nature Protection Areas" project was approved as part of the EU funding programme for the environment, nature conservation and climate policy "LIFE".
The applicant and project manager is the Institute for Applied Material Flow Management (IfaS), headed by Prof Dr Peter Heck. IfaS is an in-house institute of Trier University of Applied Sciences at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld.
The LIFE-IP ZENAPA project aims to achieveCO2e neutralityin largeprotected areas (GSG). National parks, biosphere reserves and nature parks are summarised under this term. Together with 16 partners from Germany and Luxembourg, IfaS will pursue this goal over the eight-year project period.
LIFE-IP ZENAPA will make a contribution to climate, nature and species protection - by taking concrete, climate-reducing measures - and also demonstrate that conservation goals are not contradictory, but rather complementary and can be achieved cooperatively. The main requirement and objective is the realisation of the national and Europe-wide climate protection targets (CAP 2020 and CPP 2050), taking into account the national and European biodiversity and bioeconomy strategy.
The project aims to create an information and expertise network for the exchange of experience and mutual learning. In addition, the aim is to create co-operation between the partners in order to jointly develop and implement project ideas. As a further project continuation, with the help of effective public reporting and the provision of information, imitation effects are to be triggered in cross-project regions in order to be able to make a further contribution to achieving the climate protection goals of the EU and the federal government even after the end of the project.
A total budget of around € 17 million is available for the implementation of the project over the project duration of 8 years, of which around € 8 million is funded by the LIFE programme of the European Union. The remaining sum will be provided by the project management and the partners involved as well as co-financing donors such as the Berlin Senate, KSB AG, OIE AG and the Rhineland-Palatinate Nature and Environment Foundation.
The Saarpfalz district is a project partner and implements measures in individual actions to achieve the joint project goals.
In addition to the basic measures implemented as part of the project, LIFE-IP ZENAPA also plans to initiate further projects in line with the project objectives. Funding opportunities in the three-digit million range have already been announced for these so-called "complementary projects".
ZENAPA is funded as an Integrated Project (IP) in the "Climate" sub-programme of the EU funding programme for the environment, nature conservation and climate policy "LIFE" under the project number ZENAPA - LIFE15 IPC/DE/000005.
Measures implemented
The Saarpfalz district has already implemented some measures to achieve the project goals, while others are still being planned or realised.
The project partner Biospärenzweckverband Bliesgau has had a solar roof register drawn up.
Of interest for tourism in the Saarpfalz district is the CO2 calculator, which can be used to quickly and easily determine the emissions for a trip. Lots of other valuable information and tips for sustainable travelling in the Saarpfalz district and the Bliesgau biosphere can be found on the Saarpfalz-Touristik website.
