Heat etiquette - tips and advice for hot weather

It is important to prepare for the dangers of heat stress at an early stage and to protect yourself and others from extreme heat. There are many ways to do this, which you should remind yourself of from time to time.

The heat etiquette guide contains practical behavioural tips and points out the main dangers of heat.

The information compiled by the Federal Environment Agency during the "Schattenspender" campaign was expanded to include local heat protection information from the Saarpfalz district.


Quick etiquette tips in the heat

  • Drink enough water throughout the day and eat light food
  • Avoid any exposure to heat and direct sunlight
  • Keep indoor spaces cool by ventilating them at night and shading them during the day
  • Wear airy clothing
  • Avoid/reduce sporting and physical activities
  • Consider sun protection when outdoors (headgear, sunglasses, sun cream)
  • Do NOT leave children and animals alone in the car

First aid

Provide FIRST AID and call EMERGENCY 112 if the following symptoms occur

  • Repeated, violent vomiting
  • Sudden confusion
  • Clouding of consciousness
  • Unconsciousness
  • Very high body temperature (>39°C)
  • Seizures
  • Circulatory shock
  • Severe headache
