Allies in Poland

Most of the Polish partner counties are located in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship (Polish: województwo podkarpackie). The Podkarpackie Vo ivodeship, with its capital Rzeszów, is located in south-east Poland on the border with Ukraine and Slovakia and has a population of around 2.1 million. It has maintained an official partnership with Saarland since 2009.

The Podkarpackie Voivodeship

Its foundation dates back to the Polish administrative reform in 1999, when the smaller voivodeships of Rzesów, Przemyśl and parts of the Krosno voivodeship were merged.

The Podkarpackie voivodeship is divided into four independent towns and 21 districts, four of which are officially twinned with the Saarpfalz district: the district of Przemyśl, the
district of Łańcut, the district of Bieszczady and the district of Lubaczów.




  • Bieszczady district (powiat bieszczadzki)

    The district is located in the Polish Podkarpackie voivodeship and has an area of 1,138.17 km² with a population of 21,664. The population density is 19 people/km². The seat of the district administration is the town of Ustrzyki Dolne.

    Bieszczady County in the Podkarpacki Voivodeship

    The district comprises three municipalities, including one urban and rural municipality and two rural municipalities. The cross-border Eastern Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, which extends across the border areas of Poland, Ukraine and Slovakia and co-operates with the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve, is located in the district. This cooperation is part of the official district partnership between the Saarpfalz district and the district of Bieszczady and was established on 18 October 2021.

    The district is located in the Polish Podkarpackie voivodeship and has an area of 1,029.15 km² with a population of 120,247. The population density is 117 people/km². The district administration is based in the town of Jarosław.

    The district comprises eleven municipalities, including two urban municipalities, one urban and rural municipality and eight rural municipalities.

    The district is located in the Polish Podkarpackie voivodeship and has an area of 452 km² with a population of 81,049. The population density is 179 people/km². The district administration is based in the town of Łańcut.

    The district comprises seven municipalities, including one urban municipality and six rural municipalities. Since October 2021, the district of Łańcut has maintained an official district partnership with the Saarpfalz district.

    The district is located in the Polish Podkarpackie voivodeship and has an area of 1,308.37 km² with a population of 55,217. The population density is 42 people/km². The seat of the district administration is the town of Lubaczów.

    The district comprises eight municipalities, including one urban municipality, three urban and rural municipalities and four rural municipalities. The Roztocze cross-border biosphere reserve, which stretches across the border areas of Poland and Ukraine and co-operates with the Bliesgau biosphere reserve, is located in the district. This cooperation is part of the official partnership between the Saarpfalz district and the district of Lubaczów and was established on 21 October 2021.

    The district is located in the Polish Podkarpackie voivodeship and has an area of 1213.73 km² with a population of 74,061. The population density is 61 people/km². The district administration is based in the independent town of Przemyśl.

    The district comprises ten municipalities, including one urban and rural municipality and nine rural municipalities. Since May 2011, the district of Przemyśl has maintained an official district partnership with the Saarpfalz district.

Two other Polish alliance partners are the district of Ostrzeszów, which is located in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, and the district of Krakow, which is part of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship.

    The district comprises 17 municipalities, including five urban and rural municipalities and 12 rural municipalities.
