In the Footsteps of Women: A Journey to Rare Art – A talk on forgotten female artists from the region on 29 October

This evening, art historian Dr Jutta Schwan will be presenting the extraordinary life stories and works of female artists with links to the Saarpfalz district.

Sofie Dawo, Elisabeth Koelle-Karmann, Madeleine Mangold, Hilde Mertz, Roswitha Naßhan-Weber, Len Trossen or Dorothea Zech – many of these names are completely unknown, or not as well known as the female artists behind them deserve to be. This may be because they belonged to a generation in which it was generally difficult for women to receive an artistic education. Or perhaps the art form itself – unfairly – leads a shadowy existence, such as the embroidery of chasubles. Or perhaps the artist was the wife of a famous artist, from whose shadow she was unable to step out.

There have been, and continue to be, many reasons. So this is reason enough to dedicate an evening to these female artists, to introduce them and to inspire enthusiasm for their works and careers. Not least to set out in search of clues, as these women’s works are often to be found in places well worth a visit!

The talk is free of charge, but donations are welcome. Please register by emailing [email protected].
