Paddling together, enjoying nature and actively doing something to protect our waterways and the natural environment: on 21 August, the Co-ordination Office for ‘Sustainable Youth Work in the Saarpfalz District’, in collaboration with Aventura Bliesgau, is organising a canoe clean-up on the River Blies. During this joint litter-collection trip, young people aged between 14 and 27 can paddle down the Blies in two-person canoes whilst collecting litter from and along the river.
We’ll meet at 4 pm at Lautzkirchen railway station. From there, we’ll head to the River Blies together. The tour follows the river downstream to Paradeplatz in Blieskastel and ends at around 7.30 pm. Last year, ‘Junge Biosphäre’ organised a litter-picking campaign on the river and removed a great deal of bulky and plastic waste from the Blies. It became clear then that, given the amount of rubbish in the water, the campaign absolutely must be repeated. “Our waterways are valuable habitats and, at the same time, an important part of our home. The canoe clean-up combines community involvement, experiencing nature and practical environmental protection. I am particularly pleased that young people are taking an active part in this and can show that nature conservation can be fun,” said District Administrator Frank John, welcoming the environmental campaign.
The aim of the canoe clean-up is not only to remove litter from the River Blies, but also to raise awareness of the importance of protecting our waterways and the natural environment. Together, the participants are sending a clear message about the importance of treating our local environment responsibly.
