Where Siebenpfeiffer played music on his ‘fine Viennese grand piano, crafted from mahogany’ and meticulously tended his espalier fruit trees; where Wirth was welcomed with a ‘festive banquet’ , where the Protestant dean and vicar Gottfried Weber stored his vast wine reserves, and where Georg Fein, a journalist from Helmstedt, flirted with his landlady’s daughter – such sites, steeped in anecdotes, will be visited during the upcoming summer guided tour following in Siebenpfeiffer’s footsteps through Homburg. This historical excursion focuses on the very locations where, in the run-up to the Hambach Festival between 1830 and 1832, a fundamental chapter in the history of German democracy was written. On Thursday, 20 August, the Siebenpfeiffer Foundation invites you to join this informative and entertaining tour of the town centre.
“The population there was decidedly liberal at the time; indeed, this was so very much the case that, amongst the people themselves, opposing views did not dare to be voiced, even if they might well have existed,” said Johann Georg August Wirth, editor of the *Deutsche Tribüne*, delighted by the goodwill shown to him during his first days in Homburg. The tour of the key locations associated with the events surrounding Siebenpfeiffer and Wirth is a city tour of a rather unusual kind: Participants can look forward to a dramatised costumed tour: “Regina Wirth”, the wife of Johann Georg August Wirth, will, dressed in period costume, recount her experiences during her turbulent time in Homburg. Monika Link from Zweibrücken takes on the role. Stops along the tour through the town centre include, for example, the site where Siebenpfeiffer’s flat and the ‘Landcommissariat’ (district administration office) were located, the Cappel inn, where the first of numerous ‘festive banquets’ organised by the democracy movement took place, and finally the Freedom Fountain at the roundabout. Participation is free of charge; the tour starts at 6 pm in the grounds of the Siebenpfeiffer House, Kirchenstraße 8. The tour lasts around one and a half hours; no prior registration is required.
