The Saarpfalz District’s heat portal provides a detailed overview of heat and UV protection for the general public and groups at particular risk:
Older people and family carers will find, amongst other things, information on free online courses which highlight the health risks posed by heat and teach various ways of protecting oneself, with a flexible schedule to suit each participant.
Families with young children can find information on the Heat Portal about the symptoms, as well as necessary preventative and support measures relating to heat and UV radiation. For organisations, recommendations and sample plans are available as guidance, along with information on free external nursery and school projects on UV protection. There are also plans for a district-wide prevention project in which pre-school children in childcare centres will explore the topics of heat and sun protection in a playful way, together with staff from the public health department.
For people out and about in the Saarpfalz district on hot days, the digital map of ‘cool spots’ – also available on the heat portal – can be of help. It lists outdoor areas such as various green spaces, benches and playgrounds which offer relief from the heat thanks to natural or artificial shade, or their proximity to water. Publicly accessible buildings that offer a brief respite on hot days thanks to their cooler interiors are also marked. It is important to bear in mind that the opening hours of these buildings are limited and that, during very long heatwaves, temperatures can generally rise too high even in what are normally cooler rooms. Suggestions and constructive ideas for further ‘cool places’ are welcome and can be sent to the Public Health Department at [email protected].
If you have any questions about heat and UV protection, the Public Health Department is also available to speak to you in person at various regional events (e.g. the Biosphere Festival). In early August, staff from the AWO and the Public Health Department will also be on hand as part of the AWO’sproject ‘EqualE’ in Erbach to once again answer questions about heat and sun protection for young and old alike at an information stand, and will provide useful information in an interactive and playful way during the next planned family walk.
Among the major measures in the area of heat protection is the ongoing installation, over the past few years, of drinking water dispensers in schools run by the Saarpfalz District, some of which are also funded by the state. This ensures that all pupils can drink as much as they like, free of charge, on hot days. The scheme is overseen by the Climate & Energy Unit, which forms part of the Saarpfalz District’s Property Management Department.
In addition, by the end of 2027, the department will draw up an integrated climate adaptation plan focusing on its own properties, particularly schools. This is funded by the federal government and will form the basis for implementing measures. Information and events for members of the public will also be developed as part of this process.
