Anyone visiting the orchid area knows the challenge: the parking facilities at the Lachenhof are extremely limited and are quickly exhausted during the peak season. If you park in the centre of Gersheim instead, you have to walk a long way before the actual hike begins. This is where the "Flitsaar" offers the ideal solution: the new stop at Lachenhof is located directly at the start of the orchid trail. The stress of looking for a car park is eliminated and visitors can reserve all their energy for experiencing nature.
The Flitsaar is an innovative, demand-led local transport service in parts of the Bliesgau region. As a modern shuttle service, it connects important transport hubs and railway stations directly with some of the Bliesgau's tourist highlights. By using environmentally friendly vehicles and flexible timetables, it closes the gap between local public transport and the hiking destination - perfect for anyone who wants to consciously leave their car at home. It can be ordered via the "flitsaar" app or by telephone on 06841 104-7252 and runs throughout the Bickenalbtal valley with connections to Gersheim, Blieskastel and Lautzkirchen railway station, depending on availability and demand. It can also be conveniently ordered from anywhere there to the "Orchideengebiet" stop at Lachenhof. As part of the local transport service, the regular SaarVV fares apply, as well as the "Biosphere Ticket" for up to 5 people (€9.00) at weekends and on public holidays. All tickets can be purchased directly from the driver.
The orchid area, which has been protected since 1957, is a botanical jewel. Thanks to the Mediterranean microclimate on the shell limestone, around 30 orchid species thrive here - almost half of all the species found in Germany. The orchid trail leads through this sensitive habitat at ten stations and provides information not only about the flora but also about rare species of butterflies, birds and grasshoppers.
Important information for visitors: The main flowering period runs from mid-April to July. As the trail leads over unpaved sections as well as steep ascents and descents, sturdy footwear is essential. The ground can become slippery when wet, so sure-footedness is a prerequisite.
The Gersheim countrywomen and the team from Spohns Haus provide the perfect break and invite you to the "Orchideencafé" in Spohns Haus on Sundays 17 and 31 May from 12 noon to 5 pm for coffee and home-baked cake.
