After meeting at Blieskastel/Lautzkirchen railway station, the participants first walked upstream to the embarkation point. After a short briefing, the participants set sail in two- and three-person canoes and set off on the two-hour activity full of enthusiasm. Despite the rain showers, the young people were not discouraged and collected waste from the water.
The result: four large rubbish bags and numerous bulky items. These included a garden chair, a car bumper, an old filing cabinet and even a chamber pot were fished out of the Blies. Particularly noticeable were the many plastic packages and bottles that were caught in the branches and current accumulations.
"It's frightening to see how much rubbish is found in our rivers. At the same time, it is impressive to see the enthusiasm with which the young people have set to work here. Actions like this are very important. Not only do they raise awareness for the protection of our environment, but they also promote a sense of community",
emphasised District Administrator Frank John.
After the work was done, the participants fortified themselves with sandwiches, pretzels and fruit. The most curious finds were discussed in a relaxed atmosphere. And a football from the Blies even found a new owner.
The Coordination Centre for Sustainable Youth Work would like to thank everyone involved as well as the local building yard for collecting the rubbish afterwards and, above all, the Kreissparkasse's Culture and Environment Foundation for funding the clean-up tour on the Blies. The campaign once again emphasised that everyone can make a contribution, whether by consciously separating waste or by taking a bag with them on a walk to collect carelessly discarded waste.
The workshop was organised by the Coordination Office for "Sustainable Youth Work in the Saarpfalz District"/Young Biosphere.
