Who isn't touched by the legend of St Martin, who shared his coat with a beggar and saved him from freezing to death. An act of care and charity. The school community at Kirkel Community School demonstrated this once again by taking part in the St Martin's Day campaign organised by the Homburg food bank. In keeping with the motto "Share like St Martin", all classes got involved and collected food to be distributed via the Homburg food bank. District Administrator Frank John took the opportunity to attend the handover of the donations at Schule an den Linden. "I think it's great that the pupils are setting a good example here and recognising that not everyone can help themselves to the shelves in the shops and go to the checkout without a care in the world. I am also aware of the shortages that the food bank faces time and again and that it is reliant on support. So I'm all the more pleased to see that this school is working together," said the District Administrator in praise of the organisation.
On behalf of their school community, the pupils of class 6a and student representative Elias Müller handed over over eight baskets that morning, which were well filled with long-life food such as pasta, rice and tinned food.
"The interest of the pupils and their parents in wanting to do something for others has always been very high, so it was clear to us that we would take part in the St Martin's Day campaign again after 2024. Social commitment should be an integral part of our school life, so we will also institutionalise aid campaigns like this one," assured Headmaster Christian Messemer, not without pride. In this context, the headmaster also referred once again to the school's participation in the "School without Racism - School with Courage" network as its binding commitment to the values behind it.
Antonius Daschner, coordinator of the Homburg food bank, and board member Helga Kihm gratefully accepted the donation. They confirmed the high demand both at the Homburg food bank and at the St. Ingbert food bank, where people in need are given the opportunity to save money when buying food. The campaign around St Martin's Day has been mobilising kindergartens and schools in the Saarpfalz district for several years and institutions are still being added through word of mouth. The Homburg food bank drops off empty boxes and collects them again.
What is collected is kept for additional distribution before the so-called closing days over the Christmas/New Year holidays. Antonius Daschner and Helga Kihm thanked Headmaster Christian Messemer, pupils, staff and parents for their commitment.
