As part of the "Tulips for Bread" campaign, 16 pupils from year 5 at Christian von Mannlich-Gymnasium, together with their teacher Silke Müller-Liedtke (Ethics, Politics, Protestant Religion), visited the district administration office in the old year to hand in tulip bulbs in return for a donation. The flower bed at the entrance to the vehicle registration centre was also replanted. The flower pots on the small terrace in front of the district administrator's office were also found to be suitable for tulips.
The "Tulips for Bread" project by children for children addresses and teaches, among other things, social responsibility, the coexistence of cultures and standing up for one another. In general, the idea is that schools or kindergartens agree to collect donations with the tulips by handing over the bulbs in autumn/winter or the flowers in spring in exchange for donations. The proceeds go to children and animals in need. Specifically, these are the aid organisations UNICEF, BOS (Borneo Orangutan Survival) Deutschland e.V. and Deutsche Kinderkrebshilfe.
During their visit to the district administration office, the pupils took the opportunity to personally present District Administrator Frank John with a bag of tulip bulbs and report on their approach to the project. The head of administration was impressed by the young people's commitment to realising this idea, which is simple in principle but has had a huge impact. "You are impressively demonstrating that education doesn't just take place in the classroom and you are sending a visible sign of solidarity that will outlast the moment the tulips are planted or sold. You are helping to improve the lives of others, and I think that is exemplary," praised the District Administrator, thanking all those who make the project possible and support it time and time again. In addition to the donation, the pupils also received Fairtrade chocolate bars as a thank-you gift, which they were naturally delighted to accept.
