Heat and UV protection for babies and toddlers
Babies and small children dehydrate faster than adults. However, as they are not yet able to help themselves, on sunny and hot days it is necessary for parents to consider some special features in addition to the general tips on behaviour in hot weather in order to protect their children from damage to their health caused by the sun and heat.
- Babies should never be exposed to sunlight
- If possible, do not use sun cream on children under the age of one, as it is very hard on sensitive skin
- Breastfeeding mothers should make sure they drink enough themselves and give their baby the opportunity to drink breast milk more often.
- Protect children from the sun and UV radiation with suitable clothing (loose-fitting, long clothing, sun hat (including neck protection) and sunglasses)
- For children >1 year old, use sunscreen with a high sun protection factor and reapply regularly
- Even with suitable sun protection (clothing, sun cream), children should spend the sun-intensive midday indoors if possible and the time with direct sun exposure should be kept short
- Look out for signs of heat-related symptoms
