Gersheim Community School

Further development of the school site was necessary. After a comprehensive review of the entire site, the addition of classrooms and differentiation rooms was prioritised.

Shape and location of the new building:

The single-storey extension with a partial basement for technical equipment is a new longitudinal building that extends the axes of the main building opposite the existing two-storey pavilion building. The old school containers previously stood on this site. Access is at the level of the main building via the covered walkway. The school extension thus complements the design language of the dominant main building. The (colourful) building joint between the old and new buildings clearly shows the transition to the extension.

The new school building has space for a total of 4 classrooms, a differentiation room and a team room. Sanitary facilities and technical rooms were also built. All classrooms are equipped with the latest technology and a digital whiteboard.

Building volume: approx. 2,650 cbm
Usable area approx. 515 sqm

The building was constructed as a solid masonry structure. Windows with 3-pane thermal insulation glazing were installed in the highly insulated façade of the new building. The building is structurally planned and constructed in such a way that an additional storey can be added. Heat is supplied to the building via static heating surfaces (radiators), which only heat during operating hours via an intelligent individual room control system. The new building was connected to the existing heating centre in the old building. The Saarpfalz district commissioned its first wood pellet system there in order to fulfil the requirements of the Building Energy Act and to rely on renewable energies. The school extension is also equipped with a ventilation system with heat recovery.

Year of execution and completion: autumn 2021 to autumn 2023

Energetic measures:

• Curtain wall façade with 18 cm mineral wool insulation, rear ventilation and façade panels
• Triple-glazed window façade with solar control glass
• External shading of the entire window
• Equipping the building with a central ventilation system
• Photovoltaic system on the flat roof (24 kWpeak)

Accessibility: The new building is barrier-free, with all entrances at ground level. A disabled toilet has also been installed in the sanitary facilities.

Cost of new building including outdoor facilities:

The costs for the construction project, including engineering services, totalled approx. 2.35 million euros. The planning and tendering of the construction project was carried out in individual trades. With the exception of specialist planning services, which cannot be covered internally, this was entirely in the hands of the Saarpfalz district's technical property management department.
