Children's rights project boosts self-confidence

The six municipal daycare centres have been dealing with the topic of children's rights for some time now. The KiBiSS project at the Saarpfalz district initiated a project at the request of the daycare centre managers so that the preschool children could delve deeper into the topic. Funding from the "Saarpfalz-Kreis Partnership for Democracy" in the federal "Live Democracy" programme made it possible to work with the speaker Susanne Kempf via ARTefix e.V.

On six dates in autumn, the preschool children learned about the concept of "children's rights" using a variety of examples, including from their everyday lives. They understood that they have rights and that they can demand them. The content of children's rights such as equal rights, unity in diversity and dealing with one's own boundaries and those of others were introduced in an age-appropriate way.

One practical exercise was the "stop" game. Whenever children became too close or physical, they learnt how to avert it with an energetic "stop" using appropriate arm movements.

Children who know their rights are more likely to be able to utilise them and develop their own personality better. The joint activities encouraged social interaction between the children involved and therefore helped them to get to know each other, which in turn contributed to the development of mutual understanding. The children's personalities were also strengthened through the joy of learning, doing, achieving and succeeding.

The wonderful shared experiences increased the group spirit, which was reflected in the lively dialogue between the participants.

The project promoted the development of a prejudice-free society that enables all people of all ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds to live together in harmony.
