As part of the "Tulips for Bread" campaign, Year 6 pupils from Christian von Mannlich Grammar School have once again planted tulip bulbs at the entrance to the district administration's vehicle registration office. The Homburg grammar school has been involved in this aid campaign for many years and is also supported by the school authorities. Teachers Silke Müller-Liedtke (ethics, politics, religion) and Isabelle Breyer (German, English, history and coordinator for European affairs) accompanied the girls to this event at the end of last year.
The Homburg secondary school has had a Europa-AG since 2024, which aims to strengthen the understanding of democracy, adopt a global mindset and practise solidarity in the local environment. Although it is still a relatively young working group, several projects have already been realised. These include, for example, a collection for war graves and the creation of a peace island with white hyacinths in the school playground in cooperation with the "Tulips for Bread" campaign by children for children. This involves schools or kindergartens agreeing to collect donations with the tulips by handing in the bulbs in autumn or the flowers in spring for donations. Pupils are also happy to come along for a planting, such as at the district administration office. The proceeds are donated to children and animals in need. "The approach is truly profitable, not only do our pupils learn how to plant flowers and understand their growth as a miracle of creation, but they also gain the personal experience of being able to do something for those in need," emphasised Silke Müller-Liedtke.
Although District Administrator Dr Theophil Gallo had to excuse himself from the traditional planting event, he thanked the pupils with a Fair Trade Christmas chocolate and, of course, did not forget to make a donation. "The way in which the young people here are getting involved is exemplary. I am delighted by their willingness to stand up for others and send out positive messages. We need the younger generation to have this sensitive and educated view of world affairs, because they bear the responsibility for once. I am also grateful that a Europe club has been set up at school to promote a better understanding of Europe and European values. This is and remains a matter close to my heart, which plays a role in "Landrat macht Schule", among other things," emphasised the District Administrator.
