Reading sponsorships have been arranged at daycare centres since 2009. The KiBiSS (Children-Education-Language-Socialisation) project in the Saarpfalz district coordinates the reading mentorships in cooperation with the Homburg municipal library. There are now over 40 reading mentors working in day-care centres in the Saarpfalz district, offering regular reading events. However, there are still daycare centres that would also like to take on reading mentorships. We are therefore looking for volunteers who would like to take the time to regularly read to children in a day care centre near their home. In addition to patience and resilience, those interested should enjoy reading aloud and have a good feeling for children.
Unfortunately, it is no longer a matter of course for children to be exposed to books at home. It is of great importance to familiarise children with the German language by reading aloud, to open their interest in the world of books as an important building block for their linguistic and emotional development.
The reading mentors receive the necessary tools of the trade through further training with specialised speakers. In the course of their voluntary work, the active reading mentors are also accompanied by regular meetings to exchange experiences and receive support in selecting books. So that the reading mentors do not have to buy the books themselves, they can borrow children's literature from the Homburg and St. Ingbert municipal libraries, which have an extensive collection of children's books (including multilingual books) that is constantly being added to and updated.
