Sustainable mobility and tourism

The Saarpfalz district is committed to promoting sustainable mobility alternatives such as buses, trains, bicycles and walking, taking into account not only the context of everyday transport, but also mobility in leisure and tourism. With LEADER funding from the Saarland and the EU, a "Manager for Sustainable Mobility" project position was created to personalise and supervise this interface work. After the funding period from the beginning of July 2020 to the end of June 2022, the position was permanently incorporated into the district administration's staffing plan.
As mobility is also an important component of activities and offers in leisure and tourism, the Saarpfalz district is working at the interface between mobility and tourism together with Saarpfalz-Touristik on the planning and marketing of sustainable tourism offers and on the integration of local transport into various components of destination marketing.
When it comes to cycling, the Saarpfalz district is committed to creating good starting conditions for its towns and municipalities at a higher level. To this end, the Saarpfalz district is represented by its cycling officer and is a member of the working group of bicycle-friendly municipalities in Saarland. In addition, the Saarpfalz district takes on advisory and coordinating tasks in order to achieve a transfer of knowledge with the municipalities and to mediate between the different responsibilities. As district coordinator, the Saarpfalz district is the central point of contact for its towns and municipalities for the annual StadtRadeln and SchulRadeln events.
The Saarpfalz district is responsible for signposting the tourist cycle routes Sieben-Weiher-Runde, Adebar-Runde, Bickenalb-Runde, European Mühlenradweg, Bliesgau Radweg, Glan-Blies-Weg and the Vélo-Vis-á-vis trail network. Together with Saarpfalz-Touristik, the signposted hiking trails are also managed by the staff of the Sustainable Development and Mobility Unit as part of infrastructure management.
