The Saarpfalz district is a Fairtrade district.

In 2013, the district council of the Saarpfalz district decided to apply to become a Fairtrade district. The Rhine district of Neuss, the first Fairtrade district in Germany, provided valuable advice during the application process, leading to the first certification as a Fairtrade district in 2015. Since then, the Saarpfalz district has been a Fairtrade Town and in good company: in 2024, there were around 2,277 Fairtrade Towns in 30 countries worldwide. In Germany, there were 887 Fairtrade Towns at that time. This also includes the Fairtrade Towns in Blieskastel, Homburg, Kirkel and St. Ingbert.

Interested citizens are involved in the respective Fairtrade steering groups together with the municipal administrations, world shops, day-care centres, primary schools, secondary schools, churches, NGOs and the Ökolog. Schullandheim Spohns Haus. There are eight Fairtrade daycare centres, four Fairtrade schools and several Fairtrade school classes in the Saarpfalz district.

Such campaigns throughout the year include the Flower Power campaign "Say it with fair roses", Fashion Revolution Week and Fair Week with Coffee Fairday.

The goals are:

  • Familiarisation with the living and working conditions of producer families and world trade structures
  • Raising awareness of fair and regional trade
  • Finding solutions in our own consumer behaviour and in the development and support of activities in daycare centres and schools or action days as a Fairtrade district and with the Fairtrade Towns
